Charles Garule the Artist
I was born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Winner,
South Dakota. I am a member of the
Oglala Sioux tribe on the Rosebud Reservation.
I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska.
When I was very young, I was given some pencils and paper for Christmas and that is when I started to get interested in art. At the time, the only art that was being taught was in high school. With only one art teacher to teach about 60 students, I decided to major in drafting classes.
Being married and with a family to support, my time was limited for art, but I visited every art gallery and museum and studied everything I could find. I moved to Tucson, Arizona in 2002 to see where I could take my art. I answered an ad to take pastel classes in Green Valley.
I have always been interested in portraiture, so I focused my attention on the shapes, values and colors of the human face. Being part Native American, I loved painting the Native American portraits. Recently, wildlife has become my main focus, particularly wildlife portraits. Pastel allows me to explore my love of strong color and values.
My goal is to convey the strength of the Native American spirit and the joy and appreciation of wildlife.
